A Rant About Poor Customer Service

OK....now that I am in my 50's I have long arm syndrome...that condition that effects your vision to the point where you need to hold your reading material out as far as your arm extends in the effort to read it. So, I wear glasses. What is posted below is a response to my recent interactions with Lens Crafters over a pair of glasses I purchased in February and have broken twice. Oh my.....where has decent customer service gone??? I must apologize up front, what you will read is not my best piece of writing, but an immediate response while in a pi**ed off mood.

To Whom It May Concern:
A pair of glasses purchased in February broke for the second
time...hinge spring broke. The representative in the store told me it was
because I was taking them off improperly. She told me I could replace them
at 50% off another pair. I asked her to direct me to the least expensive
pair and was told the ones I selected would cost me $150. I paid $190 for
the first pair. (The sales person told me I had "gotten a bargain.") What
does that have to do with anything? So, within a span of 6 months I would spend
$340 on basic glasses. I felt that since I have not had this experience
with other glasses I have worn over the last 20 years, that the issue may have
been with defective frames and I questioned why I would have to pay for
something defective. She told me it was store policy. I declined
the offer and called your headquarters on 8/16 and was told the store manager
would call me within 24-48 hours. I received a call today, 5 DAYS LATER
from the assistant manager. Since I need my glasses to read, I obviously
needed to get the problem taken care of someplace else, which I did. I
think the asst. manager's intention was to replace the frames if she had them in
stock. However, I had already gotten another pair since I need to
see. This was too little, too late. Maybe the first rep. in the
store should have checked with her manager in the first place. Maybe the
manager should have called me in a timely fashion. So, in the end, Lens
Crafters has $190 of my money ( oh yes...what a bargain) and I have a pair of
glasses that can't be worn and learned from a Lens Crafters representative that
I need to learn how to take off my glasses. In my opinion, I don't think
customer satisfaction is one of Lens Crafters concerns and I will be sharing my
opinon with my family, friends and those who like to follow my blog.

OK, my rant is over. I'm not sure whether or not I will receive a response, but at least I shared my opinion with them. Oh yeah....I did buy a really cute pair of glasses, at a very reasonable price at Walmart!! The ladies working in the optical department couldn't have been more courteous, helpful and friendly.

Is it true? Could it possible be??? The winter is over!! No more snow, slush, cold and shoveling!! Spring is here and it couldn't have come soon enough.

Much of the nation was pummled this winter, and here on the east coast it was especially brutal. Those of us who are in education know that a heavy snow signals a "snow day." Kids love it, and I must admit, as a teacher I, too, enjoy the occasional day off in the middle of the winter. However, this year's blasts blessed us with 5 snow days! Now they must be made up; so what would have been a spring break for many is turning into a spring weekend instead. Never mind though...the weather forcast is simply glorious and I am thrilled. As I write this post, I am sitting out on my deck, enjoying the spring breeze.

A Routine Mammogram Leads to Six Weeks of Hell

Ten days before Christmas, my best friend and I went together for our routine mammograms. I am embarrassed to admit, mine was way overdue. Our plan was to take late afternoon appointments, then have dinner and do some Christmas shopping. Since it was late in the afternoon, there was no immediate read by a radiologist, so we were sent on our way. After the mammogram, I had an immediate feeling of uneasiness. Two days later I received the call that all women dread; more films needed because of an irregularity bilaterally. Both? I was sickened.

Knowing myself and how crazy I would become if I waited, I took the first appointment the next day to have a compression mammogram to be followed by ultrasound if necessary. I sat and waited quietly for what seemed an eternity only to find that I did indeed need the ultrasound. Performed immediately, it suddenly dawned on me that within the next 15 minutes I would have very good idea as to whether or not I had breast cancer. Both of the technicians who worked with me were kind and professional. There was very little speaking which to me made it even more surreal. I searched their eyes for a clue as to what the answer was; but they are well schooled and gave no hints.

Finally, the radiologist came in, did her own quick ultrasound and stated that with 99% certainty I had fibroadenomas in both breasts. I know that fibroadenomas are benign I had one in my early twenties. I was breathing a huge sigh of relief, but in the back of my mind I was worried about that one percent. Next step was a breast surgeon.

Taking the recommendation of two colleagues, I choose a well known breast surgeon in Philadelphia, Dr. Dahlia Sataloff, associated with one of the major teaching hospitals. Again, I was struck by the total silence in the waiting room. No one even makes eye contact. When my name was called, I looked up from the magazine on which I was trying to focus to see the doctor herself waiting to greet me. When has that ever happened? I knew immediately I had found the right person for me. After a consultation, exam and view of my films she too concurred that she believed both lumps to be fibroadenomas. However, a biopsy would be needed to be certain. More time spent waiting.

The internet can be a double edged sword. A plethora of information is at our finger tips, but as we all know, a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous. I did my reading to prepare for the core needle biopsy, but in truth, there was little that could be done to alleviate my anxiety. It is true, the procedure itself, is relatively pain free. The mass in my right breast was deeply imbedded close to the chest wall, so I did experience discomfort. The left was done with nothing more than a pinch from the lidocain injection, BUT THE NOISE. Each time a piece is taken the machine makes a noise that reminded me of the dentist's office. A little pressure is put on the site where the needle is inserted, and steri-strips are applied and you are good to go and wait some more. In my case it was only 48 hours. The diagnosis confirmed with a phone call from Dr. Sataloff....BENIGN. I will see my surgeon again after 6 months for a follow up and additional mammograms.

I am lucky, grateful and I must admit still apprehensive. It is a bit unsettling to know that I still have two masses in my breasts. There is much discussion about whether the biopsy really samples everything. Back in the day, when I had my first experience, technology and medicine were not as sophisticated and the immediate line of treatment was surgery.

I am haunted by this experience. It's been a couple of weeks now and I still think about it every day. I think about the women who receive a different result and it seems that no matter where I turn, someone else I know is being diganosed. Maybe it is just my age, 51 that makes me more aware of the frailty of the human body.

Post Script: I would be remiss if I did not send a universal thank you to the radiologist, technicians and staff at the Women's Imaging Center of Pennsylvania Hospital for their compassion, kindness, patience and professionalism on a very difficult day. Also....big thanks to my family, friends and colleagues for lots of hugs and support. (Especially Lee)

Is Divorce Ever Equitable?

Let me begin by saying that I am not a divorce lawyer and any experience I have in this arena is strictly personal experience; both my own and experience via observation of my friends, colleagues and acquaintances. That being said, this blog entry may be a bit emotional and yes a bit angry.]

A friend of mine is currently going through a divorce. After 24 years of marriage, her husband found the company of a 25 year old and her small child more appealing than the life he had built with his wife and their two sons. Ok, ok it's the same old song and dance. Most of us have heard this tale more than we care to admit. After a little over a year and a half of pain, humiliation, anger and a host of other emotions, the time has come for the end. Now is the time that their 24 years of marriage is reduced to dollar signs and possessions.

In the state of New Jersey, divorce is all about equitable distribution. The definition of equitable is "characterized by equity or fairness; just and right; fair; reasonable." At her mediation the other day, this 51 year old baby boomer, who has worked diligently in education for the last 27 years, while raising her two sons and contributing more than her "fair share" during the course of her marriage was informed that she would most likely be surrendering between 45 and 50% of her pension to the man whose actions deleted a history just as easily as pushing the delete button on the computer. His employement over the years has not yielded much in the way of pension. Oh yeah, and let's not forget that she will need to sell her house of 20 years too to pay him his share. Call me crazy, but this just doesn't seem "equitable!" Not only has her life past and present been shattered, her future is shattered as well.

It is hard to comfort my friend on her down days. She is hurt, pissed and often afraid. To tell you the truth, I am pissed for her. Is the moral of the story screw whomever you want, literally and figuratively, but it will be OK? How can it be that in 2009 it is still the woman who suffers more financially as a result of divorce? How nice for him to know that his future is secure so that he can begin his new life in peace. That seems "equitable" doesn't it?

I am always reading about baby boomers, menopause, night sweats and generally all information that pertains to those of us who are living in this transitional period. I came across a plethora of articles, but these three stood out because they resonated with me since I had actually engaged in conversations about these topics this week.

The heat of the summer is over and fall is upon us. I, for one, am thrilled. Maybe a little cooler weather will take some of the heat out of those hot flashes!! What Has Happened to My Decollete?

Maybe it's my turning 51, maybe it's my being perimenopausal, but all of a sudden I have become obsessed with the little lines and wrinkles on my face. You know...those little lines of character, that lovingly tell the story of our life experiences. OH PLEASE!!! They are wrinkles....aging skin creases that make me look old and I don't like them. And....how about that decollete!! All of a sudden I can't stop looking at it. It's not that it is wrinkly, it just looks, well, weathered. That would be the best way to describe it.

I have now joined the ranks of thousands of women who are looking for just the right combination of cleanser, moisturizer, serums etc. to help us battle father time. There are 11,000 baby boomers turning 50 every day and it is projected that there will be a $12 billion increase in money spent on anti-aging products and supplements in the next year and a half alone. Wow!! Those of us who either choose to refrain from costly cosmetic procedures or simply don't want to shell out the bucks for botox, are most certainly spending some serious cash on skincare.

Most recently, Monday to be exact, I started a new regime using a new product line called Striking. According to the literature, I should begin to see firmer skin, a reduction in the appearance of of fine lines and wrinkles, smoother skin, and an overall improvement in the appearance of my skin in as little as 14 days. I can also use it on my weathered decollete!! The system is a simple 4 step program consisting of a creamy cleanser, serum, eye cream and moisture cream.

What is their secret you may be asking....PEPTIDES.....patented "Smart Peptides" Now this is where it gets scientific, so I will let you see and listen for yourself at an short informational video on YouTube. As a 51 year old woman, I am rather slow to pick up on the social media craze. However, because of my wicking sleepwear business, Lunar Radiance, I have been somewhat forced to take a close look and jump in. I must admit, I have been rather slow at it, but little by little I am starting to enjoy it.

While I do have a Facebook page, my favorite form of social media is Twitter. It is free and rather simple. Sign up, select your twitter user name and you are set to go. Take some time to fill out your profile, and play with the different settings and backgrounds to find one that you like. You can even upload your own image for a more customized background.

Next, you will want to find some people to follow who have the same interests. Maybe you are Twittering for business or you have a hobby. Click on "find people" and type your topic in the box that asks "Who are you looking for?" For example, I am always interested in internet marketing, so that's what I searched. What you will find is a list of people who share the same interest. Read their profile, and if you want, start to follow them. Try to pick Tweeps who have currently been active. Usually after you start following them, they will follow you back. You can accept or reject requests to be followed. Take a look at who is following the Tweeps you have selected and start following them too. That's how it becomes viral! It really is quite fun, and doesn't take much time.

Each time you login to your Twitter account, you will see what your "Tweeps" have been Twittering about. I follow Women's Health Magazine. Today one of their tweets was a link to an article about customizing your own workout. I checked it out and found it helpful since I am always looking for ways to slim down my thighs and keep my workouts fresh! Americans Must Pay Attention

I rarely write on political issues. However, as a mother of a recent graduate, who is facing difficulties finding a job; a mother of a child who will graduate from college within the next 4 years, and as a baby boomer who has worked as a teacher for 30 years and would like to see her medical benefits and pension intact, I have to write.

I have my own opinions about Obama, the stimulus, the proposed food and beverage taxes and the proposed healthcare plan, and I will keep them to myself. What I would like to do is encourage people to educated themselves on these pressing issues and contact your Congressmen and Senators to let them know how you feel.

How Do You Beat the Heat?

Summer is here and the temperature is heating up across the country. In my neck of the woods we are just happy to see the sunshine after a long period of rain every day. Temps are expected to skyrocket at the end of this week.

When it heats up outside, I look for ways to stay cool on the inside. I love to experiment with summertime drinks. Sometimes they are of the alcoholic type, but most often I choose the "virgin version." Alcohol tends to make a girl feel warm, and heaven knows, menopausal women don't need any more causes for hot flashes and night sweats.

So here is a new recipe that was shared with me today, and it sounds totally DE-LI-CIOUS. Just thought I would pass it along....

Fresh Mint and Ginger and Lemonade

Yield: Makes 4 servings
This distinctive fat-free drink is a great change of pace from coffee or tea.

Ingredients
1/2 cup (packed) chopped fresh mint leaves
1/3 cup chopped fresh ginger
1/3 cup honey
2 cups boiling water
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 cups (about) cold water
Ice cubes
Fresh mint leaves
Lemon slices

Just mix together, pour over the ice and garnish with some fresh mint leaves and lemon slices! Yum.

The blogs are buzzing this morning with Happy Mother's Day wishes, and I just want to add one more.

Of course, my first thoughts go to my own mom, who passed 7 years ago. Each Mother's Day I would take my children to her apartment where we would plant a garden in her small flowerbed by her door. Today, I will be planting some flowers of my own in my front garden and I know I will be thinking of her.

Next I am thinking about my own children. This is the first Mother's Day that I have awakened and I am childless. No breakfast in bed for me this year. I never knew what my daughter would be cooking up, but she worked hard at whatever it was, and made sure that her brother was a participant...usually the dishes were his job. Both of my kids are away at school this year, but God bless my daughter.....she made sure that flowers arrived yesterday. I cried when I read the card. Thank you Ryan and Devon...I love you both.

Finally, I am thinking about all of the women I am friends with who don't have children of their own, but have either been so wonderful to mine or work in a capacity where they enrich the lives of children every day. Special kudos to Aunt Sharon, Aunt Jackie and Aunt Terri plus countless others.

So...Happy Mother's Day to all of the women in my life who have nurtured me with love and friendship, and have helped me to be the best mother I can be.

Musings on Self Image - Man vs Woman

Why is it that when men look at themselves in the mirror, and I am talking about men who are lets say....45 and older..... they puff themselves up like peacocks and see themselves as the dashing 30 somethings they once were; yet women zero in on the spreading thighs, thicker middles and sagging breasts? A little gray hair on a man is distinguished. However that same gray on a woman represents a minimum of $65 in a salon, depending on where you live.

I was recently having a conversation with a male and female baby boomer about another couple who had know each other in high school, and recently reconnected and married. This led to a bit of reminiscing about high school relationships. The gentleman in the group smiled at the memory of his one time beloved, then interjected his thought that she probably had put on weight.

Whoa..........buddy. I couldn't let him off the hook for that comment and redirected his attention to the spreading middle he was sporting. His response, as he sucked in and puffed up, "It's a baggy shirt." What a classic.

I don't think this is anything new. For years older men have sought and attained the company of younger women. When the shoe is on the other foot, well....can you spell C-O-U-G-A-R? That's tad bit of a nasty title don't ya think?

How about commercials and advertisements that bombard women daily with potions, lotions and creams to wipe away wrinkles, sags and bags on various parts of our bodies. We buy....I buy. It seems like every day I notice some new sign that aging is upon me. This week it was a few age spots on my once fabulous legs. OMG...as I wrote the last sentence a commerical for a serum that assists "menopausal skin" just came across my TV screen. The maintenance, both cosmetically and physically is just plain old exhausting.

Life would be so much easier for us baby boomer women if we could just "suck it in" and blame it on a big shirt.

Who's In Charge?

The new administration has been in office for 60 days, and I am left wondering ..."Who is in charge?" Our President is busy making appearances on Jay Leno and continues to work the town hall circuit as though he were still campaigning. We have been hearing over and over that our country is in a financial shambles and our leader is out of Washington, playing celebrity, instead of staying in town and working.

There are already rumors that Tim Geithner, Secretary of the Treasury, may be looking at resigning or being fired. Members of Congress and senators are bikering with each other over who is to blame for the most recent AIG bonus catastrophe. Did anyone read the Stimulus Package before it was approved?

Let's not forget about Gitmo....Attorney General, Eric Holder announced this week that some of the released prisoners may be coming to a town near you!

As this week comes to a close, I am feeling more frustrated, less safe and more unsure than ever of the future of this country. Can our President step up to the plate this coming week? Could he please stop running, like the election is still on, stay put and lead? You've been elected Mr. President, now please, do the job.

Wow!! The Dow was up 377 points today! Yipee!! Does that mean anything to you? Are you like the millions of people who watch the Dow daily and cringe with fear and worry every time it drops just a bit more? Are you like me and most of my baby boomer friends who don't even want to open their next statements because what has transpired over the last few months may mean that their plans for retirement may need to be, well... retired for a little while?

I think that each of us has taken a different attitude about the current financial status in which we currently find ourselves. One friend of mine immediately withdrew all of her family's investments/retirement money and put it into a plain, old savings account.

Another friend and her husband have decided to truly stimulate the economy by buying a new car and renovating their kitchen. They have excellent credit, and very stable jobs. They had been wanting to make these changes and with their retirement just a few years off, they figured now would be the time.

I, and many of my colleagues and friends, left my money where it was never dreaming that the market would hit 6000. I spoke with my investment broker last week and he confirmed what I suspected.....I would take a major bath if I pulled out now, so I just need to ride it out. He believes that we should see a turn around beginning around the end of April/beginning of May. For all of our sakes, I hope he is right.

I am fortunate to have a career that is recession/depression proof, teaching. So I am not worried about losing my job. However, I do have another college tuition to take care of and worry about student loan money drying up.

I have a son who will be graduating from college this year with a marketing degree....oh heavens....I think he will be inhabiting his freshly painted room again as he looks for a job. I do worry about his future.

There is no doubt about it, my wicking sleepwear business, Lunar Radiance has been a bit slower than it was this time last year, but by no means is it ready to float belly up...so that is good news.

Almost everyone is impacted in some shape or form, and has a financial issue they are stressing over, but is there a mentally healthy way to approach these times without losing our minds? Obviously worrying does nothing to solve the problems, so what do we do?

Where Has the Time Gone??

Wow...I must be getting old, but time is definitely passing more quickly. It has been close to a month since my last post, but in my defense, I have been busy.

Thankfully, my Christmas season at Lunar Radiance was good. Everyone in retail experienced a bit of a downturn, but I guess those old night sweats don't understand economics and my business was able to hold steady. Post Christmas I have been managing minimal returns and preparing for the nasty tax season. Honestly, that is the worst part of being in business for me....paperwork.

My children were home for Christmas, which I loved and there was a lot of hustle....boyfriends, girlfriends and friends were in and out. It was awesome. Tomorrow my daughter returns to school which makes me sad, and my son has been back for two weeks. I will be back to the empty nest.

However...I always find a way to keep myself busy. I have started working feverishly, allowing my creative juices to flow by creating greeting cards and gifts which are sold through two pods over at Zazzle and my newest a Greeting Card Universe.

I just want to wish everyone who celebrates Christmas a very Merry Christmas. No PC here...I openly wish those who participate a Merry Christmas.

I hope that everyone finds the sort of peace that is represented by the season, although it may not be easy. Please keep in mind that it is not important to have a Norman Rockwellesque holiday, just one that brings you happiness and is authentic to you!

I reminded myself, last weekend, that although circumstances in my life may not be optimal, I can choose to be happy and enjoy what the season has to offer in my own way. I can choose to fight the fight, or go with the flow. Going with the flow is so much better.

So....Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Brrrr..........it is cold here in New Jersey this fine Saturday morning, but I like it! Since my hot flashes are a pretty regular happening these days, I don't really mind. It is a bit of a welcome relief. Plus, this is just one more signal that the winter and holiday season is upon us and I love it. Next week, my daughter will be home from college for her winter break and then I will be able to decorate my house for the holidays. I made her a promise that I would wait since she has certain decorations she likes to take care of.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the season. This year, it is a bit more exciting for me because both of my children are home together for the first time since the middle of August. I have had quite a few chuckles already listening to them bicker over something silly. However, I have really enjoyed watching them reconnect and share stories of their college exploits. These things for which I am thankful this year cost absolutely nothing! All I need to do is sit back and take in the sights and sounds that remind me that as corny as it may sound, I have every thing I need when I know that my kids are happy and healthy.

I hope all of you find something for which you can be thankful and enjoy a true day of Thanksgiving!

The Election is Over - Yeah!

After record turnouts across the country for a historic election, the people have spoken! After two years of campaigning and mudslinging the election is over. We are through with the nasty commercials, and maybe we will experience some healing and repairing. Heaven knows this country needs healing and repairing.

My voting experience was uneventful. I must have picked a great time to cast my vote because the line was minimal. I had already made my decisions for the presidential and local elections so I didn't spend much time in the booth. It was pretty much in and out.

I have my reservations about the outcome. Maybe I am jaded, but I am hard pressed to believe that any one administration will be able to do what this one has promised, but I suppose one can always hope.

What are your thoughts, concerns and hopes? How was your voting experience....any problems or clear sailing? Did everyone in your house vote along the same line? What do you think about the media coverage? What will we all do now?

Online Shopping in a Bad Economy

I love shopping on line! Obviously, since I have my own internet retail business selling wicking pajamas and wicking nightgowns, I am not afraid to fill my cart, pull out my card and click "complete transaction" on everything from tablewear to underwear.

Shopping online is cost effective, secure and easy. Even when it may be time to tighten our belts a bit, we still need to buy items. Women will continue to have night sweats and holiday shopping will still need to get done. So, why not look for the most cost and time efficient way to do so?

I love being able to take my time and browse a "store" at my leisure no matter what the time day or night.
I like having the ability to get answers to my questions regarding returns, colors, sizes etc. simply by "clicking" a link. I don't need to trudge through a store looking for someone to help me. If worse comes to worse, I just call the toll free number listed to have my question answered.
My time is valuable, so shopping conveniently for me is a blessing, and given the cost of gas, I am all about saving money by not using my car to drive all over town.
Prices are competitive online. Internet retailers know that it is EASY to do a price comparison. So in a bad economy when everyone is looking for a deal, you have a great opportunity to find one!
Most reputable sites have testimonials from customers that give the shopper an idea of whether the product is all it supposed to be. Read them! I rarely stop fellow shoppers in a store to get their opinion, but I will always read a testimonial. I can pretty much insure that my hard earned money is being well spent. Isn't that something we all want?
Hard to find items often can be found online. Wicking sleepwear is not easy to find in stores, but readily available on the internet. I recently found a certain type of briefcase for my husband on line that I was struggling to find in the real world.....reasonably priced too!

This past weekend, I was a bit of an internet shopping fiend. I went QVC wild. I watched the presentations, then jumped on my computer to order. I read the testimonials and picked up a couple of great deals. (All done while I was in my pajamas!)

I am grateful that my daughter is home from college for a four day visit.
I am grateful that I had a household of healthy, happy college students last night, and got to make breakfast for them this morning.
I am grateful that I am having my family over for a roast beef dinner today.
I am grateful that I have roast beef and mashed potatoes to cook!
I am grateful that it is such a beautiful fall day today.
I am grateful that the Phillies are in the playoffs and playing today....Go Phillies!

My Hiatus is Over and I Have Quit!

Well, it has been a month since my last post, and now my hiatus is over. On September 3rd I smoked my last cigarette. The past 28 days have been quite challenging; more challenging than I expected. I suppose you have to be a smoker or an ex-smoker to truly appreciate the tentacles of nicotine addiction and the effect that the act of quitting really has.

I smoked since my sophomore year in high school. Over the years, almost everything I did became connected to smoking. When you quit smoking, not only do you experience withdrawal from nicotine, but you need to re-program your way of thinking when doing even the most daily chores. It goes beyond the biggies that everyone thinks of......the smoke after eating or the smoke with your daily coffee. Most smokers associate MANY activities with smoking. Smoking keeps us company while we work, talk on the phone, cook, clean, put on our makeup, drive to work, drive home from work. The list could go on and on.

Over the last month, there were many things I avoided, if I could, because the activity would trigger such a strong craving. Blogging was one. I ALWAYS smoked a few as I wrote. They kept me company when I would be doing my research for Sunday Morning News. I would fire a couple up as I checked my stats. I could go on and on with example, but I am sure you get my point.

I am early in "my quit," but I am making it. I have come to understand just how nicotine addiction works and why it is so hard to make a quit stick. Life is beginning to feel a bit more back to normal, and I have missed some feeling of normalcy. One of the supports I have used is a fabulous website called QuitNet. Happy Labor Day weekend to my fellow laboring baby boomers! This holiday, started about a hundred years ago, was put into place to honor the working man. It is now the signal for one last trip to the beach, final barbeques, and the beginning of school. I used to joke that I went into a state of mourning because I would be giving up my carefree days to return to teaching. I still lament because, although I love teaching, I sure do hate getting up early!

WOW! McCain Surprises Everyone

Last night as my husband and I watched the final night of the Democratic National Convention, I commented that I really felt McCain was up for a large challenge when facing Obama because of his promise of change; something our country yearns for. I was questioning what McCain could possibly do to jump start and electrify his campaign. I think we all received his answer this morning.

Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska and mother of five, has certainly put the spark back into McCain's campaign, and I must admit, has had me rivoted to my TV this morning as I am working. I was losing interest in this election. I really felt it was more of the same. Even last night as I watched Obama, who I think is a fabulous orator, I was not moved in his direction. There is a reason why I am undecided, but this morning I am at least excited again about this election. My mind is already reeling with the pros and cons, but I am eager to learn more about this woman and what she may possibly bring to the McCain ticket and to our country.

Should The Drinking Age Be Lowered?

Much discussion has been generated this week over the idea of dropping the drinking age to 18. The Amethyst Initiative is made up of university chancellors and presidents who believe that the current age of 21 encourages binge drinking on college campuses.

I have both an 18 year old college freshman and a 21 year old college senior. My kids were not high school drinkers. I do know that my son drank off campus when he entered college....not something I supported but actively denounced. I hold my breath regarding my daughter. They know my position, but the reality is there is little we can do as parents once they are there. I have to admit, that my initial reaction is no. I need to do more reading about the subject and data that both supports and refutes the idea.

OK......I know it's not the morning, but my day got away from me today. However, my little fingers have been clicking the keys and searching the internet for the latest news and stories of interest, so here goes.....

Is it a myth that menopause puts a damper on libido? True, woman suffer from a host of uncomfortable symptoms including hotflashes and night sweats, but a recent survey dispels this myth and eases women's concerns regarding hormonal changes and changes in their sex life. Osteoporosis, which means porous bone, is a natural process that accelerates during menopause due to the decrease in the production of estrogen. It is often referred to as the silent disease because we can't see it nor feel its effects unless it is brought to our attention because of a broken bone. According to an article in the Times-Picayune, "almost 80 percent of the 661 people (older than 45) recently surveyed by the National Osteoporosis Foundation said they didn't think that the disease was a risk factor for broken bones, and 60 percent of women and 90 percent of men had not discussed their osteoporosis risk with their doctors." Time Passes Too Quickly for This Baby Boomer Woman!

Happy Sunday Everyone!!

I can't believe that it is already August 9th. To me that signals that I will be heading back to my full time teaching job soon....3 weeks and counting! It also means that it 3 days I will be sending off my youngest to college for the first time. My daughter, my baby, will be making her own transition and I am again facing another....I will be an empty nester! It is so bitter sweet. This is what I have been preparing her for, so why does it feel so sad?

Our living room is filled with boxes of snacks, water, new linens, toiletries, and office supplies. It is all there waiting to be loaded into the van Tuesday night. The washer and dryer have been going non stop as she squeezes in loads of laundry in between her last days of work and visits with her friends. Tonight, all of her close circle will gather here for one last sleepover; one last time for them to be together before they all go their separate ways; one last time for me to watch and listen to all of the laughter and excitement of being young.

Where has the time gone? The little girl is gone, and is now a beautiful young woman. Time has passed too quickly....at least for me!

A Friendly Approach to Quitting Smoking

I always like to bring you new topics and products that I think will enhance your life. Quitting smoking is something I have been wrestling with for years. I know it is something that I have to do for obvious reasons, but I have tried in the past and failed. I have set a quit date for myself of September 3rd....the date is rapidly approaching and I am nervous. In my research for tips and techniques I have found what I consider to be a friendly, practical approach by Dr. Sally Witt.

Dr. Sally, as she is know, is a Breakthrough Coach, and hypnotherapist who has a Ph.D. in Spiritual Counseling. Because the habit of smoking is not only a physical addiction, but a psychological one as well, Dr. Sally addresses the psychological area through a series of videos focusing on hypnosis, EFT (emotional freedom techniques) and NLP (neurolinguistic programming).

This is a new launch for her, so I have not received mine yet, but I am anxious and hopeful. I have spent hundreds of dollars in the past on patches and gum, so for me to invest $97 in my health seems like a great deal. And.....since I spend $6/day on cigarettes I figure I will recoup my money within 3 weeks.

I Just Love Blogging

I have so enjoyed blogging Hot Flashing Thoughts, that in addition I have started a new blog entitled Not Fit to Pick. The idea was actually sparked by a friend of mine who is going through the aftermath of a divorce. This has been quite a reflective time for her and we have had many conversations about relationships, past and present and the lessons we have learned. We were talking about how valuable it is when we as women share those relections and lessons with each other. So...here is a blog that does that. It isn't about man bashing it's about sharing what we have learned. Women have so much to share and so many ways to help and support each other.

What Would You Do Differently?

How many times have you said or thought "If only I knew then what I know now?" With my impending empty nest, I have been thrown into a bit of reflection. I suppose that this is a common occurence for many baby boomers as they face a change in circumstance.

If you did have the benefit of all of the wordly wisdom you have accumulated over the last 20 or so years, what if anything would you do differently?

**Ditch those painful relationships sooner than you did?
**Choose a different career?
**Foster better relationships with your parents?
**Prepare more for retirement?
**Have more children?
**Get a degree or some form of higher education?
**Save more?
**Spend more?
**Have more fun?
**Move to a different city?
**Get divorced?
**Stay married?

Or....maybe you wouldn't change anything. Maybe we are the wonderful people we are today because we are the sum and total of all of our experiences both good and bad. What do you think?

Menopause and Insomnia - What About Melatonin?

After I had children I thought that I would never sleep through the night again. There was a brief respite between the ages of 5 and 16, but then the kids started driving and sleepless nights started again.

Now, it's perimenopause/menopause and a night of solid, blissful sleep alludes me. Frequently women in transition awake several times a night. We can thank our ovaries for that. They stop producing as much estrogen as they used to and we are thrown into hormonal swings that can make us want to howl like coyotes during the day, and leave us watching the clock in the middle of the night.

Melatonin is another issue. It is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland that promotes sleep. The pineal gland turns off during the day when it is light, and turns on at night. Melatonin is produced in greater levels when we are young, but production slows down as we age. It is thought that this may be another reason why we have difficulty sleeping as we get older.

Synthetic melatonin is produced, but because it is not categorized as a drug, it does not need FDA approval. In addition, studies concerning the effects and benefits of synthetic melatonin are somewhat inconclusive. Personally, I am always hesitant about taking any type of medication or supplements. So, I am seeking feedback for myself and for others who may be thinking about this.

How Are Hot Flashes Like Volcanic Eruptions?

It starts deep within the earth....it becomes so hot that some of the rocks begin to melt and become a liquid commonly known as magma. The pressure builds and eventually some of the magma forces its way to the surface and presto.....the lava spills and a volcanic erruption occurs!

Why the mini earth science lesson? Well, while trying to describe to my husband what I was feeling on a much more regular basis than ever before, this was the only analogy that I could come up with. "She's gonna blow," is becoming a common refrain in my house. I feel like a volcano!

Some volcanic eruptions are explosive and some are not.....just like my hot flashes. Sometimes I just heat up and become uncomfortable. Some volcanic eruptions can be dangerous and deadly. Ok...I'm not going to die from my hot flashes, but they sure can be dangerous to those who are around me because I may whack them in the head with whatever is in my hands as I begin to fan myself and mop up my personal lava (sweat).

My volcano tends to lie more dormant during the day and really likes to make an appearance at night. (From what I've read, this is not uncommon.) Why do natural wonders seem more spectacular at night? It is at those times that I am ever so grateful for my wicking sleepwear. At least I don't have to get up and change my clothes and sheets when my lava spills.

The good news.....is there really good news? Yes! Unlike volcanic eruptions which can periodically rear their ugly heads for hundreds of years, my hot flashes and night sweats, and those of my fellow baby boomer women, will only hang around for a few! It just feels like forever.

Summer Vacation

Do you remember the days when you had to write an essay about "My Summer Vacation?" I do and they usually weren't that exciting. Money was scarce for my single mother, but I do remember fondly our trips to Williamsburg and Washington D.C. I didn't fly until I was 14 when we took a trip to visit her friends in Florida. However, times have changed for most baby boomers.

According to a report by AARP, a greater percentage of boomers today have a passport and travel to international destinations. We tend to look for more exotic places to visit and are more adventurous. Gone are the days of waiting for retirement to take a cruise or cross the pond to explore all that Europe has to offer. On my last vacation to Sedona, Arizona, this past fall, my husband, who is 20 years my senior, and I hiked our butts off! We were exhausted at the end of the day, but exhilarated.

So, if you have to write about your summer vacation this year, what will it say? Are you an adventurous boomer, planning something exotic? Or are you planning to stay closer to home (those darned gas prices), make a visit to see family or take short day trips? As for me, I will be staying put, getting my daughter ready to go to college for the first time and saving my pennies to pay for tuition!

Fast Facts About Menopause

Many baby boomer women are in the transitional life stages of perimenopause and menopause. As they will attest, the physical and emotional changes that come as part of the package can be daunting. When talking with a girlfriend the other day, commiserating about the latest menopausal gifts we had received she asked me if I was itchy. I couldn't believe it, so I did a bit of digging.

Hormonal swings, poor diet, dehydration of the skin and even smoking all contribute to the midlife itches. There are some steps we can take to help alleviate itching during menopause. Keeping Myself Honest and Motivated

In an earlier post, I spoke about an epiphany I had over Mother's Day weekend. I had gone to a wedding and took a look at myself in pictures. Yikes!! Obviously I have been spending way to much time on the computer working my wicking sleepwear business and blogging and forgot that I needed to stay active.

Most baby boomers will agree that as we get older, the weight seems to creep up easier and is more difficult to get off. Gone are the days when we can lose a quick few for a special event. Losing weight, safely, takes time and a committment to a healthier way of life. Activity is key, as is everything in moderation.

I have taken up walking using Leslie Sansone's program. This works for me since I am not a gym person. I like the flexibility I have by working out at home and this walking program is structured just enough and gentle on my knees. Better yet, I am seeing results, and this keeps me going on the days when I really don't feel like exercising.

To keep me honest, I am recording my progress on a sweet little gadget from the ticker factory. OK...how crazy am I posting this for all the world to see, at the bottom of my blog.

This past weekend we celebrated my daughter's graduation. Too much cake and party food...but I got right back on the exercise train the next day. So...now I have confessed and my conscience is clear. (Must be my old Catholic school training coming out) The point is we can be fabulous and fifty, but it takes a commitment to activity and healthier choices. Is that really such a hard thing to do?

Turning Desire Into Something More

I am frequently asked how I came up with idea to start my wicking sleepwear business, Lunar Radiance. The basic answer is simple: necessity. I was experiencing night sweats and found wicking pajamas by accident. As my husband and I sat at dinner that night, and my pajamas were still in the bag, we started discussing possibilities. You see, I had always had in the recesses of my mind, the desire to start a business. I always admired people who took an idea and ran with it, and created a business. I guess I had always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but just didn't have a direction.

Once I experienced the relief that was provided with this remarkable product I began to think....hey Eileen, what are your waiting for? Millions of baby boomer women are in the same boat. I had never heard of wicking sleepwear, and I am on the internet all the time; why not spread the word? So, from those simple questions, an obvious need and an innate desire, and hours of tireless research, my journey began.

Do I have a business background? The answer is no. I have been a teacher for 28 years, but I can read, listen and learn. Am I a computer guru? The answer is no. However, I can read, listen and learn. As I began the process I realized that there is a wealth of information, resources and support available as long as you are eager and willing to read, listen and learn and to put in the time.

Now, I am not naive enough to think that just because you have desire every idea can be turned into a lucrative business; there has to be a market. (That's an entire blog entry in itself) The steps in the process of turning an idea into a full fledged business are numerous and at times exhausting, but it can be done and the personal satisfaction is indescribable.

I love this business. I get excited when I get an email from someone who has reaped the benefits of the wicking sleepwear I carry and are finally sleeping better. I am gratified when a woman, who has found some information from my resources page or my newsletter, tells me that she found help or could relate in some way to what I had written. I become energized when I am networking with other baby boomer women who are engaged in thinking and creating. I feel an immense sense of pride when I look at my website. What was once notes and drawings on sheets of paper, is now up and running and evolving, changing and expanding.

It is true.....desire can be turned into something more. What is your passion?

Sleeping and Menopause

I didn't need to read an article to know that in the last couple of years, my sleep patterns have definitely taken a turn for the worse. Often it is difficult for me to fall asleep, and I can't remember the last time that I slept through the night. I am still perimenopausal, so I still have periods. As my period draws near, my sleep disturbances are worse as are my night sweats. At that time, I am always grateful for my wicking pajamas and nightgowns.

In my surfing today, I came across an article that provided more validation of my plight and the plight of many other perimenopausal and menopausal women, and I wanted to share it with you. It is titled Getting a Good Night's Sleep is the Biggest Problem For Women Entering Menopause. It states that "Sleep disruption is the most common and severe symptom reported by middle-aged women when their periods change and they start moving into the menopause, according to a study in the April issue of the UK-based Journal of Clinical Nursing." Calling All Empty Nesters

As many of you who regularly visit my blog know, this coming August I will be an official empty nester. This past week, my daughter and I attended one of the many college orientations. The college representatives did their best at providing the parents with tips for helping their college freshmen make the transition into college life, but what about us?

I must admit, I am intrigued by the idea of having a life of my own again. It has been a long time since I have not had daily, hands on responsibility for my children. What will it be like to not have to cook or clean up after someone other than my husband and myself? What will it feel like to not have daily, physical contact with my daughter so that I know she is ok? As a mother, as many of you know, all you need to do is look at your child and you can tell if something is off. Now I will have to resort to a tone of voice or the words in an email to determine if things are on or off course. These questions have been keeping me awake as much as my night sweats did before I found wicking pajamas!

So I am looking to my readers for advice; not just for myself, but for other baby boomers as well, who are moving into the next phase.

Happy Mother's Day My Boomer Friends

Happy Mother's Day to all! This post is being written from the Buffalo-Niagra International Airport. My husband and I are returning from the wedding of his niece. He traveled solo on Friday and I met him yesterday because I needed to stay behind to see my daughter off on her Senior Prom on Friday evening.

The activities of this weekend are so appropriate for Mother's day weekend because weddings and proms are such a mother daughter thing. On Friday, I bursted with pride as I watched my somewhat tomboyish daughter transform into a spectacular beauty. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. She was so lovely, and poised and again I was reminded of how she is just steps away from beginning a new and exciting part of her life. This is what I have been doing for the last 18 years....preparing her to move on as a self assured young woman. What better mother's day gift could I have asked for than to witness another step forward.

Yesterday, my sister-in-law watched as her daughter married. I watched Judy as her eyes glistened with tears of happiness and pride. For her this is another key moment in her life as well as the life of her daughter.

What beautiful mother's day gifts Judy and I received this weekend, and they are not the kind that can be bought, but they are the ones most precious.....they are memories that will never be forgotten.

Consequently, I have put on a few pounds. This lack of exercise, combined with menopausal belly has left me less than excited about the prospects of shopping.

This time I decided to approach my shopping trip with a new point of view. Instead of conjuring up a ton of negative chatter in my head I decided to just accept that my body is where it is right now. Instead of limiting myself to my usual "black because it makes me look thinner" I was open to pattern and color. I asked my best baby boomer girlfriend, who I trust to give me an honest, yet encouraging opinion, to go with me......and presto.....I found the perfect dress for the occasion! It has color, pattern and even a belt!

Sometimes we are so hard on ourselves. We see all of our flaws and forget to play up the good stuff. I still have a decent pair of legs, so I opted for something that highlights them. It felt good to take this different approach and it was quite freeing.

Now don't get me wrong.....I know that I will feel better both physically and mentally when I shed my unwanted pounds, but that doesn't mean that I have to participate in the self loathing that many of us so often do.

Try being kind and accepting of yourselves ladies. Look for the beauty that you have, play up your many assets and push out those negative messages. Let's all dress with less stress!

Transitional Moments

Yesterday my daughter turned 18. My baby will soon graduate from high school and in a short 4 months will be off to college. How did this happen?

When talking about how to celebrate her birthday, I requested that we do something one last time....have a sleepover. When she was young, I used to dread those sleepovers. I was always daunted by the prospects of keeping a gaggle of young girls occupied. This year I wanted it. Initially, my daughter thought it was "corny" but when she ran it by her girlfriends they were all for it.

Last night and this morning I found myself surrounded my 4 amazing young women. They are all bright, focused and full of anticipation of the upcoming events of prom, graduation and college. Three are future science majors and one is an impending children's book illustrator. Every once and a while I would stick my head in an overhear snippets of conversations.....the regular girl stuff and said a quick "thank you" to the universe for blessing me with a daughter who has remained innocent and enjoyed her youth. Neither she nor her friends have been spoiled by ugliness. Their faces are fresh and optimistic.

I graduated from high school 22 years ago, and although it didn't seem it at the time, options were limited. The possibilites available to our daughters seem endless to me, and it thrills me to see them embracing them.

Those of you who visit my blog regularly know of the trepidation I am experiencing over my pending "empty nest." I really wanted this pajama party as much for myself as for my daughter. I knew she would have fun, but I wanted to have one more night to watch the look on her face as she opened gifts, laughed and enjoyed being carefree.

This time, I looked upon the sleepover as one more opportunity for each of us to create a memory as we both prepare to move on, just like we should be.

I was searching for a photo today for a project I was working on and came across a photographer who really does some pretty neat stuff. Her name is Teri Francis....her work is at the right and left.

What started out with her love for squirrels has turned out to be more than just a hobby; it has become a passion that has taken her beyond the world of her furry/feathered friends.

I contacted her to find out where I could purchase some of her work and we had a chance to chat. She, too, is a baby boomer.....soon to be 50....(ok now I outed her age, hope she doesn't mind) who has turned something she always enjoyed doing, into something that not only brings her joy, but some green too! She is a fascinating, creative and talented woman. I can't wait to have her do some work for my wicking sleepwear business!

If It Ain't Broke...Don't Fix It!

Ok....maybe it my age (the big 50 is just around the corner).....maybe it is because I am sentimental, or maybe change is just difficult, but sometimes I think that there are some things that just shouldn't be changed.

Last night, my husband and I paid a visit to the Ritz Carlton in Center City, Philadelphia. We periodically stop by there to have a drink in their small bar called "The Vault" or sometimes just enjoy coffee or tea in their beautiful lobby. This place is filled with sentiment for us. We went there on our first date and subsequently had our wedding reception there as well. We have fabulous memories.

On a regular evening, it was not uncommon to find large groups of people having cocktails, sitting around chatting or enjoying the spectacular Chocolate Bar on Friday evenings. There was always a bustling crowd. The food was great as was the service. Located in a stately, historic, old bank building it was the perfect combination of gracious ambiance of the past and modern day convenience.

Last night, as we entered through the grand doors were were faced with tall white partitions which were erected to hide the view of "renovations." The main lobby is closed, but we ascended the main staircase to have a peek over the barrier. My first reaction was "YUCK." For some reason a decision has been made to convert this once comfortable, traditional, grand old man into something more hip and contemporary. From there we went to "The Vault." In the past, you would never be able to get a seat on a Friday night. There was no problem last night. There were six people total.....two at the bar and four crowded around one the the five, small square tables that have been shoved into a room that once served as the vault to the old bank.

My husband and I talked about it this morning with a sense of melancholy. Must all "old" traditions make way for the modern and urban? Does this renovation actually symbolize a greater message: old and traditional must make way for younger and newer? Since when is the familiar and comfortable such a bad thing? Just because something is old, doesn't mean it is broken.

I know that I am not privy to the $$ bottom line of the large corporation that runs this hotel. Most likely there is a rational explanation for these changes, but on for me it was a huge disappointment. As I said earlier, maybe it is just this baby boomer's impending milestone birthday at the root of this post, but it it ain't broke...don't fix it.

Where Has Good Service Gone?

I decided yesterday that my printer wasn't as efficient as I needed it to be, so I went on the hunt for something new. My first stop was at one of the well known business supply stores. I perused for a bit, found two that met my needs and then had to search for someone to answer my questions. My first gripe.....I had to search for help.

When I asked the young man if I could see one of my choices in action, he politely informed me that the model I was interested in was new and that the store did not have one on display. When I asked if we could open one since the store would have to put one up for display anyway he told me in no uncertain terms, "No."

OK.....well let's look at model #2. I asked for a demo. I really wanted to check out the quality of the print. As it turned out, the ink in my second choice was low, so the printer spit out a basically blank piece of paper.

"It's out of ink," responded the young man. NO KIDDING! The two of us just stood there looking at each other. After I suggested he replace the cartridge, he begrudgingly agreed. This took about another 10 minutes.

Then I asked to see it do the two sided print that he box boasted. He couldn't get it to work. He literally scratched his head, pulled up a chair and repeated the same steps over and over to no avail. When I offered the idea of reading the directions, that was a bit of a problem because it meant we needed to open another box to get them and he informed me that he doesn't usually read directions! After about 20 minutes, my husband and I left.

On to super store number two. No luck here! Plenty of workers on the floor, but no one who really seemed too interested in selling any printers. My help came in the form of a young man, whose pants were so low on his hips that he had to periodically stop to pull them up. When I asked if he had the model I was looking for, his mumbled response was "Did you see it?" He then made a cursory effort to find what I wanted, walked up and down the aisle literally slamming the lids of various printers, then told me "Looks like you're out a luck." The end!

Store number three......here I was actually lucky enough to find a man in his early 50's who was an actual HP representative, visiting the store. He was knowledgeable and genuinely interested in selling a printer. Finally......success.....so I thought. After a demo that put my mind at ease, there were none in stock!

I started to think that maybe the universe was trying to send me the message that I wasn't supposed to buy a printer, but I really needed to get one. So....back to store one. I didn't see the young man who worked with me the first time. I think he was so disturbed my his first encounter with the printer earlier, he must of had to take an early lunch or maybe a nap!

My husband put the cumbersome box in our cart, I made my purchase and we were off. Needless to say, I was one frustrated baby boomer woman!

Why is good, friendly customer service so hard to find?
What has happened to people really trying to help their customers?
Why don't people who work at stores know their products?
Does anyone really care about customer service anymore?

If I ran my business this way, I wouldn't sell a single pair of pajamas!

Making Your Way Through Financing College

Many baby boomers are in the middle of funding college educations for their children. Next year, I will have two children in college. My son will be a senior at a public college in Maryland and my daughter will be attending a private college in Pennsylvania.

For most of their lives I was a single parent. While I always made a decent living, there was not much left over to save generously for college. Their dad, for various reasons will not be contributing to their college tuitions, so I am solely responsible for funding. I have to admit, this has started to cause me some sleepless nights.

There seems to be quite a maze of options available for financing, and I thought I would share a bit of what I have learned and I am hoping that others will add to this information as well.

OK....so how can we get our kids through college? What are our options? What do we, as parents or guardians need to do?

Community College: These are two year schools which offer students a chance to take many of the basic liberal arts courses that are required in the first two years. Most of the time your student will live at home so this saves tons of money on dorms and meal plans. Tuition is very reasonable and if your student has done well academically in high school, they may even be able to have that tuition reduced. In New Jersey, the STARS program rewards students graduating in the top 20% of their class with free tuition! Many community colleges work closely with public 4 year colleges to make transferring after two years at community easy.
FAFSA: This must be completed if your student is planning on applying for scholarships or student loans. This is done EVERY Year! The sooner you can complete this the better. It is highly recommended that it be done by the end of January. You can use the previous year's tax return and then go back and update once you have your current tax return completed. Check with individual colleges for deadlines. It is a bit time consuming and initially seems overwhelming. This application can be done online, so click here for a direct link! Note: Your expected family contribution is based on the household in which the child resides. So if you are remarried, the step parent's income is considered even if they are not helping pay for tuition!
Scholarships: Private colleges and universities usually have a structure in place for awarding "free money" to students. Each school will have its own set of guidelines for these awards. So as you are looking at colleges take a close look at what your child needs to do to be eligible. Many times it is connected to class rank and SAT scores, so you need to be realistic. Think you have an athlete who will receive money for their talents? The NCAA has a boatload of rules and regulations for this too! Only Division One and Division Two schools can award athletic scholarships, but there are academic requirements. There are also a multitude of small, some quirky scholarships available, but you and your child will have to dig and read. FASTWEB is one such website where you can register for information and apply for independent scholarships.
Grants: These are need based awards. After you fill out the FAFSA and your expected family contribution is calculated your child may be eligible to receive a grant. This is money that does not have to be repaid.
Student Loans: The Stafford Loan is available for students to take. Repayment does not begin until after graduation. Again the FAFSA must be completed and your child needs to apply through his/her college. This can all be done online and colleges are usually good about helping you through the process. Click Here to find out how much your student can borrow each year and for more information on the Stafford.
Parent Loans: PLUS-Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students. These are low-cost education loans for parents at a fixed interest rate (currently 8.5%) Repayment starts shortly after disbursement and requires a credit check. There is also an "origination fee." You can do this through your selected college.
Monthly Payment Plans: Some colleges will offer interest free installment plans. My daughter's college will allow me to decide how much of her tuition I would like to pay over a ten month period and deduct this from my account monthly.

These are just some of the options available that I have found. Believe me, I am learning as I go and by no means claim to be an expert. Use the financial aid office at your college to help you with all of this, and read as much as you can to help yourself become familiar. Nevertheless, I eagerly anticipate the rebirth that seems to take place this time of year....budding blooms on the trees, the smell of freshly cut lawns and the beautiful colors of emerging flowers.

Mothers, Daughters and Empty Nesting

My relationship with my mother was somewhat tumultuous. Eighteen years ago, when I found out that the child I was carrying was a girl, I was nervous. I knew from the start that I wanted to have a better relationship with my daughter that I had with my own mother, but wasn't sure I would know how. Over the last 18 years I have worked hard at trying to nurture my girl, and nurture our relationship.

My daughter and I are now at a transition in our relationship. She is about to graduate from high school and will leave for college in August. This past week, she left for her senior class trip to Florida. When I dropped her off at school early Sunday morning I watched her as she excitedly pulled her suitcase away from the car to embark on her journey and I cried. Although I have been thinking about her impending departure this August, this brief trip really brought it home for me. Soon, she will be off on her own to a certain degree and I am filled with such mixed emotions. Is this what it will feel like to be an "empty nester?" Have I done my job well? Will we still be able to enjoy the closeness and the bond that we have forged with each other?

I talked about this with my girlfriends this week. Some of them have have already made this transition and offered advice. They tell me that this is a time of new exploration for myself. My husband and I will have the freedom to do things without constraint. I will have more time to grow my fledgling wicking sleepwear business. I will now will have time for me! However, I am still feeling a bit shaky.

My daughter returned home at 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Although tired, she was eager to talk and we did....until 3 when I had to close my eyes so that I could get up for work at 6. She was bubbling with stories and anecdotes. Yesterday she bounded into the house with her pictures of her trip. Again, we sat together, looked at each and she recounted exactly where she was and what was happening in each. As she talked, I just watched her. She is so beautiful, full of life and eagerly anticipating the changes ahead of her. She is blossoming into a beautiful young woman and yes....she still wants to share it with me.

The worries I had 18 years ago are faded, but I must admit that this time for me is bittersweet.

Color Is In For Spring

After a long, dreary winter it is time to start thinking about shedding those heavy sweaters and moving towards lightening our clothing load. Last spring was the season of black and white, this spring is all about bursts of color. Even the wicking sleepwear that I am carrying in my spring and summer line has hints of brighter colors like turquoise.

My clothing color palette is heavy in neutrals. Actually, my best friend is always busting on me for that, so I know that for some, color can be scary. I ran across the following anecdote on a fellow Boomer's site, Boomer World. Just a bit of humor on a rainy day!

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other, except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box.

When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000. He asked her about the contents. "When we were to be married," she said, "my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll."

The little old man was so moved, he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness."Honey," he said, "that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?""Oh," she said, "that's the money I made from selling the dolls."

Do You Know A Surfing Novice?

Because of my internet business, Lunar Radiance, I spend an enormous amount of time surfing the net. It never occurred to me that there are those who find the world wide web a challenge. Last night, I was speaking with my cousin. She is an intelligent, 48 year old woman, but she confessed that she basically uses her computer for playing games and sending email. I was amazed.

I use the internet for business, shopping....lots of shopping, research, entertainment and as a resource for answers to questions of all sorts. I frequently look for answers to medical questions for myself, my family and friends. While I was surfing today, I came across an article on the CNN website which offers tips for finding answers to medical questions without losing your mind. Click Here to read more. Hair-The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Part 2

A couple of posts ago I wrote about the gyrations women go through to have a "good hair day." I also admitted that I was going to cheat on my stylist, and the guilt that I felt over doing so.

Well....I did it. The deed is done! I crossed over to someone new, and I must say that any guilt I had is totally gone. Christopher is my new man. He listened, understood and was able to completely satisfy my needs. He took his time; he was in no rush to make me happy. He was careful and meticulous as he placed each highlight. New cut....new color.....I have been transformed and I absolutely love it! I had a great hair day today, and despite the beginnings of a sinus infection, I felt great.

I have succumbed to "Salon Junkie Syndrome" and I am totally ok with it. So go ahead...jump ship if you're not happy. A person who brings a new set of eyes to your hair frenzy can work wonders. As for me, I will stick with Christopher.....until I feel the need to wander again.

Braces Anyone?

Unfortunately, I have been spending way too much time in the dentist's chair lately. My dentist fear stems from my childhood, I am sure. We were poor and the only time I went to the dentist was when there was an emergency. Consequently, I associate the dentist with pain. Now, as I approach 50, a few of those heavily filled teeth are breaking and require crowns. Thank heavens there are miraculous advances in detal technology, and pain isn't an issue, just time and discomfort.

I have always been envious of those who have beautiful, straight, white teeth. Orthodontics wasn't an option when I was young. Then, as I had my own children, of course they had braces. However, now as I approach my 50th birthday, and after speaking at great length with my dentist, I have been thinking that braces may be the perfect gift.

My husband was completely taken back when I discussed this with him. He couldn't quite wrap his head around this idea. He gave his appropriate good husband response of "Honey, you have a beautiful smile." While I do appreciate his loving comment, I went on to explain.

For years my less than perfect teeth have bothered me. I always looked at people's teeth. I internally grumble when I see my smile in pictures. Some women have a little nip, tuck, lift or suction as they age; why can't I have straight teeth?

So, I am in the process of doing a bit of research.

Is there anyone out there who has had braces as an adult?
If so, did you opt for the traditional or invisible type?
How long did it take?

Hair-The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Are all women focused on their hair, or is it just me? Does a bad hair day really affect your mood? I am making a true confession here, I am a hairmaniac. Maybe it is just because I am hating mine right now and so ready for a change that I could scream, but I think that hairmania is a condition that primarily strikes women at epidemic proportions.

Our mothers did it, their mothers did it and now it is passed on to our generation and we will pass it on to the next. I can already see it with my teenage daughter. Coloring, teasing, spraying, geling, curling, straightening, ironing....oh Lord, the lengths that we go to so we can insure we are having a "good hair day" are endless. I have vivid memories of my mother sleeping with torturous rollers and my grandmother, who had her hair "done" once a week, would carefully wrap it with toilet paper each night and cover it with some sort of bonnet to keep it just so. By the end of the week, it looked like a matted rug.

Let's not forget "Salon Junkie Syndrome." You know women who have this condition; you may even be one of these women who shamelessly moves from one salon to the next on the never ending search for the perfect style and color. Have they no ability to commit?

I have been loyal to my stylist for years, but yesterday I crossed over, gave in to my hairmania and made the call to someone new. I am consciously going to cheat on my stylist. Will the guilt I suffer be worth it? Will Christopher be able to perform magic that will make me smile at the mirror each morning after I have finished my moussing, drying and spraying? He must be good since I have to wait 10 days before I can settle into his chair! I have seen his work on a colleague and she has her hairmania under control. Will he be able to do it for me?

Super Bowl Sunday-Sunday Morning News Just For Us!

I like football, I really do, but I have to admit, today doesn't really rank as a holiday for me like it does for many people around the country. My husband is not a football fan, my son is away at college and my teenage daughter has other plans. I'm kind of bummed. I feel like I'm missing out on something. Today I will have no excuse to overindulge in great food that is totally bad for me or throw my regular Sunday chores to the wayside.

When I think back to long ago when I was married to my first husband, my role on Super Bowl Sunday was mainly food preparer. We would usually pack up the car with our share of goodies and travel to a friend's house....the one who had the best TV. Then, the men would crowd around the TV to cheer, eat and drink. The women would spend a good part of the evening in the kitchen gabbing and laying out the spread. We would occassionally pop our heads into the family room and catch a score. Finally there would be the cleanup.

Hey....wait a minute....maybe I'm not so bummed after all!

You can't turn on the news or read a paper without being innundated with presidential primary news. There is no doubt, this is a history making election with so much at stake. All "hot button" issues are involved....age, race, gender and religion. My guess would be that people choose a candidate who they feel best addresses their needs, concerns and views both in the present and for the future.

I admit, I am a bit of a primary news junkie. I watch it all and I am fascinated as I watch the candidates, both Republican and Democrat, slug it out. I desperately try to filter out the traditional political bashing and find a way to get to the core of what they believe. I am working hard at not becoming cynical and suspicious of the process. So I pose some questions to my fellow boomers:

Does a candidate's race play a part in our decision this election season?

Here is bit of humor to get your weekend started!

One day, when a seamstress was sewing while sitting close to a river, her thimble fell into the river. When she cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, "My dear child, why are you crying?" The seamstress replied that her thimble had fallen into the water and that she needed it to help her husband in making a living for their family. The Lord dipped His hand into the water and pulled up a golden thimble set with sapphires.

"Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked The seamstress replied, "No."

The Lord again dipped into the river. He held out a golden thimble studded with rubies.

"Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked. Again, the seamstress replied, "No."

The Lord reached down again and came up with a leather thimble.

"Is this your thimble ?" the Lord asked. The seamstress replied, "Yes." The Lord was pleased with the woman's honesty and gave her all three thimbles to keep, and the seamstress went home happy.

Some years later, the seamstress was walking with her husband along the riverbank, and her husband fell into the river and disappeared under the water.

When she cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked her, "Why are you crying?"

"Oh Lord, my husband has fallen into the river!"

The Lord went down into the water and came up with George Clooney. "Is this your husband?" the Lord asked.

"Yes," cried the seamstress.

The Lord was furious. "You lied! That is an untruth!"

The seamstress replied, "Oh, forgive me, my Lord. It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I had said 'no' to George Clooney, you would have come up with Brad Pitt.

Then if I said 'no' to him, you would have come up with my husband.

Had I then said 'yes,' you would have given me all three.

Lord, I'm not in the best of health and would not be able to take care of all three husbands, so THAT'S why I said 'yes' to George Clooney.

And so the Lord let her keep him.

The moral of this story is: Whenever a woman lies, it's for a good and honorable reason, and in the best interest of others. That's our story, and we're sticking to it.

New Year's Resolutions

“8 in 2008” We Can Do This!

As we begin the New Year, many of us will make resolutions that we know will be a memory by January 5th. This year, I want us to throw out that foolishness and just commit to "8 for 2008". These are simple things that can change your life forever!

1. I WILL take 15 minutes in the morning just for me. I will take some deep breaths and clear my head without husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, child, parent, or anyone else hanging around.

2. I WILL schedule an appointment with my doctor for a full physical exam and I will be prepared to ask questions.

3. I WILL not let anyone speak negativity into my life. I will stay strong and positive and get rid of anyone that is not supportive of ME!

4. I WILL purpose to do something unexpected and good for someone else at least once month. I will not brag or broadcast my good deeds.

5. I WILL commit to trying my BEST to exercise at least three times a week, with the goal of making this part of my daily life.

6. I WILL commit to trying my BEST to kick my junk food, fried food, sodas, fatty/yummy desserts habit. I will limit myself to two small guilt free splurges a week ONLY if I keep my exercise goals.

7. I WILL spend time each day in prayer and meditation. I will thank God each day for allowing me to still breathe, be in my right mind and for the measure of health that He's given me. I will pray for others and for this world. I will seek Him first as I seek and work for better health and wholeness.

8. No matter what my weight, my physical appearance, my education, my income, my family background, my present state in life; I WILL tell myself each and every day that God loves ME, I love ME and I am wonderfully and phenomenally made! I KNOW that I am a Queen/King and I will walk, talk and be treated like the royalty that I am.

If You See This Movie, Bring a Box of Tissues

Like many people, I like to see movies during the week between Christmas and New Year's. This past week, I managed to catch two. One was Charlie Wilson's War, which I enjoyed a lot. Actually, I would like to see it again. The other was P.S. I Love You.

P.S. I Love You is totally a "chick flick" (I saw it with two girlfriends and my 17 year old daughter) but it packed quite an emotional punch. It takes you through the first year after the main character, Holly, loses her husband, the love of her young life, to a brain tumor. She is guided through her grief with messages left to her, by her dead husband, and secretly delivered.

The crying starts gradually, and by the end of this two hour movie, which surprisingly offers many opportunities for laughter, you hear open sobs throughout the audience. I did my fair share of weeping and was deeply affected by the portrayed emotions which were not unlike the ones I experienced when I suddenly lost my 38 year old fiance nine years ago. Some of the scenes so strikingly resembled ones I experienced, I shuttered.

I began to think, on my way home, about the universal experience of love and grief, and started to ask myself some questions. Do we ever truly recover from such a tramatic loss, or do we just manage to bury the hurt deep inside so that we can move on with our lives and be happy again? Once you have had a powerful, soulmate connection with someone, can you ever have another?

In need of a little cathartic crying? Go see P.S. I Love You......just remember the tissues!

The Day After

Ahhh....the cookies have been baked, the presents have been wrapped and unwrapped and the holiday meal has been cooked and consumed. I'm tired! How about you?

I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday. Mine was lovely, but exhausting. For the last week my scissors have be on fire cutting paper and my pots and pans have been slamming. So, today I took the day off. I am lucky enough to have off from school for the entire week, so today was a day of total relaxation. I am embarassed to admit, I didn't even get out of my sweats today and I ate two, count'em two pieces of delicious pumpking pie! However, I did check out weight watchers on line and plan on joining on the first of the year.

I love the day after Christmas. I feel satisfied and content. It doesn't have anything to do with the gifts I was fortunate enough to receive; I'm not really sure why. I just really enjoy the aftermath of the hustle and bustle.

What do you do when the holiday is over? Travel? Movies? Any post holiday rituals?

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

It has been a slow news week as far as my usual subjects are concerned, so I thought I would solicit your opinions on a topic that is always debated this time of year. What is more appropriate....."Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays?"

Yesterday, I was watching a Fox News program and caught a bit of a discussion on this topic. Ben Stein was discussing some research that had been done showing that stores that decorated for Christmas, and openly acknowledged the "Christmas Season" were experiencing higher sales volume than stores following a more politically correct tone of "Holiday Season." He also went on to say that it is his belief that it is the Christmas season because December 25th is Christmas Day not Holiday Day.

What do you think? Are you offended when someone says "Merry Christmas?" Do you extend the spirit of the season by wishing people "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays?" Would you be more likely to shop at a store that promotes a holiday theme or a Christmas theme?

Sunday Morning News Just For Us!

Good Morning Everyone

The pace is picking up and the rush to the gift giving finish line is on! Yikes......I actually had to venture out yesterday into the parking lot jungle. Sometimes it can't be avoided. The good news for retailers is the shopping malls were packed.

While at the mall, my husband and I took the time to do something I haven't done in a long time. I visited Santa! Ok, I didn't actually sit on his lap, but we watched as one by one, sometimes two by two, children made their way up to jolly old St. Nick. I loved it.

The Santa we saw was extremely patient and obviously loved what he does. He talked quietly and the children spoke to him. They stared into his eyes and listened intently sometimes just nodding their heads. Of course, their parents were beaming. It took me back to a long time ago when my children were small, and made me smile and wonder how time has passed so quickly. Visiting Santa and watching made me feel kind of warm and fuzzy.....and no, it wasn't a hot flash! It was just nice to take a break from the hustle of shopping and enjoy the happiness of others.

So, let's see what is interesting this week in the world of baby boomers.

We are going to take a bit of a turn this week. Instead of strictly news this week, we are going to take a look at a few articles from some of my favorite boomer websites that are just plain old interesting and fun! There's no theme, just information that is timely for us. I thought I would mix it up a bit this week.

Cyber Monday

First came "Black Friday" now we have "Cyber Monday." It seems that Monday, November 26th is designated Cyber Monday.....the heaviest day for online shopping. As I mentioned in my previous post, part of my plan to make my holidays less stressful is to do as much of my shopping as I can online. Actually, I started today and I thought I would pass along some of the sites I found. A couple of these are really great for sending gifts to people you may not have the opportunity to see, but want them to know you are thinking about them.

I have it set that so all you have to do is click on the box and you will go right to the site.

Yummy stuff here! Love the pictures. More great eats! I sent 2 today.

Every year my kids get a new ornament to add to their collection. When they leave to start their own homes, they will have their personal collection for their tree. I found some adorable, personalized ornaments for them here, and at a great price!

I was a shopping fool today, but at least I was able to do it in my pajamas!

Sunday Morning News Just For Us!

Thanksgiving is over and the race is on to find the perfect gifts, decorate, wrap, bake cookies and plan the perfect holiday meal. Some radio stations are playing Christmas music 24/7 and we are inundated with commercial after commercial. You can already feel the mania building. Geez.....how will we squeeze in the responsibilities of daily life without totally losing our minds?

Personally, I plan on trying to keep everything in perspective and find some balance this holiday season. I will try to do as much of my holiday shopping, as possible, online. Why spend the money on gas and fight the crowds? I will elicit the help of my daughter when it comes to decorating and baking.....she loves it, so that is not much of a chore for her. Most importantly, I will TRY to keep in mind what the spirit of the season is really about and not totally lose my mind!

In honor of the impending frenzy, much of this week's news is devoted to managing the stress. Happy reading and stay calm!

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. These past few days, as the weather has turned colder and more seasonal, I found myself taking deep breaths and turning my face upward to feel the chilly air blow across my face. There is a certain smell that I associate with this time of year. I can't quite accurately describe it, but I know what it is. It is the signal that winter is coming and the holidays are upon us.

On the actual day, I love the smell that knocks you over when you walk into the house and the aroma of turkey wafts through the air. The gathering of family, usually the same faces and same stories in tow each year, brings a sort of comfort that although some circumstances may have changed during the year, some things stay the same. My parents have passed on, and I have only one brother. This is the one day that we are certain to see each other. Today my son made the trek that so many college students make....he came home for the first time after being away for three months at college. For all of these gifts, I am thankful.

Now, you may be thinking that I am painting a picture of some type of Norman Rockwell scene; believe me it is not. If I allowed myself, I could go on and on about what is not right. However, I choose to focus on these things that I have instead of things I do not. I choose to be grateful for the many gifts I have been given, instead of dwelling on the way it is not.

Tomorrow, as I bid my students goodbye for a long weekend, I am painfully aware that for some of them it will be fraught with tension and unhappiness. (Holidays are good for that sometimes.) Heaven knows that there have been holidays that for one reason or another, were painful for me. I get it, but there is something else I get.....that no matter how dismal our situations may seem, there is always something for which we can be thankful....even if it is just turning our faces upward and feeling the breeze.

Good Morning Ladies,

It feels good to be back in routine. After being away last week, there is a lot of news to catch up on. I hope this past week went well for all of you. I suffered a bit of the post vacations blues, myself, but ended my week on a high note. I had the opportunity to have lunch, yesterday, with an exceptional woman named Dotsie Bregel. Dotsie is the founder of the National Association for Baby Boomer Women and has an incredible website called Boomer Women Speak. She is quite a savvy boomer woman who made the step into the world of business five years ago, with the hopes of making an impact in the lives of boomer women, and she has done a fabulous job. We had never met in person, only via phone and email, but managed to chat away on life, children and business like we had know each other for a long time. Amazing thing about women....when we have something in common and mix it with good food, conversation seems to come so easily. Check out both of her sites and join in the fun and camaraderie...you won't be disappointed.

Afterwards, my husband and I did a bit of Christmas shopping. This is a first for me starting so early, but J.C. Penney had so many bargains, I couldn't pass it up!

Now onto what is new in the world of boomers, menopause and night sweats.....

Do You Feel Guilty?

I was having lunch with two of my female colleagues yesterday and the topic of guilt crept into our conversation. Both of these women, who are well educated and in their mid forties, discussed openly how they felt guilty about something on a pretty regular basis. One even spoke of how she felt guilty about something every day. From small matters such as hating to pack her teenage sons' lunches, to large matters such as not having enough contact with her dysfunctional parents, she feels guilty.

As our conversation continued, some questions began to rise to the surface. Is this a female phenomenon? Do women feel guilty more often than men? Why do we feel guilty about so many things? How do we rid ourselves of these feelings of guilt? Could it be that our guilt is connected to our shedding of traditional roles?

How often do you feel guilty? What sends your guilt-o-meter over the top? And....if you live relatively guilt free, what is your secret?
